Ridley Scott probably wanted to work with something more down to earth after the three ambitious outings Alien, Blade Runner, and Legend, when he directed Someone To Watch Over Me and ventured into stylish thriller territory.
Set in New York, Tom Berenger plays husband and father Mike Keegan; a newly promoted cop turned detective, who serves as Claire Gregory’s (Mimi Rogers) bodyguard after she witnessed the murder of her rich, cocky ex-boyfriend. The two develop an intimate relationship, as he is somewhat entranced by the classy and beautiful woman, who is in total contrast to his own handy cop wife, Ellie (Lorraine Bracco). Unfortunately for Claire, the killer is a psychopath with connections, and he can’t rest until she’s dead.
This slick thriller has a charming cast allover, and the personal drama actually gets more screentime, than then overall murder plot – which I didn’t mind at all. Andreas Katsulas, who played G’Kar in 110 episodes of Babylon 5, does a great job as the stone cold killer, whose imaginative and intelligent ways to get to Claire throughout the film, didn’t go in synch with the overly desperate finale of the whole thing (not gonna give that away though).
